When modern life disappoints us, or fails to gratify us, or leaves us feeling empty or angry or lost, many of us search for answers in the arts, the most directly interpretable being literature.  Literature can offer us an escape, for a while at least, but it can also lead us to the discovery of meaning, that which is missing in what might often seem a frivolous or pointless existence.

Philosophical novels build stories around ideas about being human. Many of these ideas are complex, and are best approached lyrically, brought to light in the interplay of characters rather than in referential exposition. These are the stories that resonate, evoke meaning and console.
