In Medio Dierum
Summary
In Medio Dierum [In the Middle of Days] is a story written by Catherine Dean (from In Living Memory) as a fictionalised biographical instrument to record the extraordinary adult life and philosophical thought of Gabriella Barton, through her own eyes and the eyes of those closest to her. The narrative is a pastiche of personal diaries, Gabriella’s Master’s thesis on Nietzsche, excerpts from Cate’s unfinished novel, imagined conversations, letters, lists and other found literary objects such as poems and song lyrics.
It follows the story of Imogen (Gabriella’s character), a young, intelligent, beautiful woman, who’d been adopted as a baby by a wealthy bohemian couple, and grown up surrounded by love and art and provocative ideas. But in her middle teens she’d been tragically orphaned, only to be taken in by her uncle and his family to a more traditional but equally loving home.
In her university years she meets the love of her life, and together they begin to forge a life of great passion, self-discovery and intellectual endeavour, But Imogen’s thirst for bold ideas and esoteric debate struggles to co-exist with her lover’s affinity to the quiet magic of wilderness and artistic expression. Their perfect life collapses and they go their separate ways, but their love endures.
Several years later Imogen meets the second love of her life, and the story follows their blossoming love affair as they leave Australia for Imogen’s studies and their travels in Europe, all the while being shadowed by a deadly secret, about which she’d never been told. With their eventual return to Melbourne, Imogen is reconnected with the people and places that helped shape her brilliant philosophy of life.
It’s a coming-of-age story, a love story, a story of forgiveness and regret, a meditation on intellectual passion. In Medio Dierum asks us to consider when the price of destiny is too high, and whether the cost of suffering and sacrifice can ever be justified.
