In Living Memory

Summary

In Living Memory is a story written by Sam Kane (from the novel In Body, In Mind), following Cate Strong and her husband Mark after a car accident leaves Cate with amnesia. Despite Mark’s deteriorating health, they try to recapture Cate’s memory by returning to significant events from her history. But in doing so, they lift the top off a marriage of strangers, with both of their authentic selves having been hidden away behind walls of secrets, disinterest and misguided motivations.

As Cate’s complicated past emerges, they are forced to confront the true nature of their relationship, and decide how they can best meet the inevitable future laid out before them. From Sydney’s Northern Beaches, to the lush, dark forests of Malaysia, to the old world elegance of Melbourne’s Brighton Beach, they search for a past they can share, a love they can trust, and a new way of living that will hold them together to the end.

In Living Memory is a story which examines the question of how much of who we are is determined by our memory. If we have to remember who we love, do we really love them? If we have to remember what we believe, is it really our belief? If we have to remember what we’ve said before, is anything we say what we really think? If our interaction with the universe around us is continually mediated by the past, how and why should we think of ourselves as authentic beings? The story also explores the disorienting experience of an evolving sense of self, and the liberating experience of forgetting.

In Living Memory is a love story, a detective story, a chronicle of family and friendship, and a meditation on the precarious and impermanent nature of the psychological self.

Some Reader Feedback (no spoilers)

In Living Memory is an amazing piece of work (dare I say a Magnus Opus) that had me intrigued from start to finish. As you told me, it’s quite different from In Body, In Mind, but had the same effect of introducing me to many things I was not aware of before …

Ken, Canberra

I loved the twists and turns, the coincidences, and the thought provoking ideas on love, relationships, how we are held back by our pasts and the concept of moving forward, and of accepting death as a part of life.

Michelle, Melbourne

The book deals with lots of sensitive issues: facing death, illness, religion, child-parent relationships, inadequate parents, loss of health/mobility, status anxiety, people in aged care. All of the issues are dealt with sensitively and in a way that makes them real to the reader. We think about the dilemmas the characters face and feel some of the emotions they are feeling.

Warren, Brisbane

I was awed by the breadth and depth of the scope of your work and the way in which the travails and expressions of a wide variety of the human experience are tied together …  The amount of effort you put into research must have been extreme.

Barry, Launceston

I think that I am almost overwhelmed by the number of serious, relevant and important concurrent themes that ILM challenges the reader with. I guess that the role of memory in our beings is crucial …

The humour is another central theme … you have dropped some classics this time.

John, Devon, UK
