Books

Sam’s debut novel, In Living Memory, was initially published in August 2002. It is now scheduled to be released under the Phenomenology Press imprint in early 2025. It’s a story which examines the question of how much of who we are is determined by our memory. If we have to remember who we love, do we really love them? If we have to remember what we believe, do we really believe it? If we have to remember what we’ve said before, is anything we say what we really think? If our interaction with the universe around us is continually mediated by the past, how and why should we think of ourselves as authentic beings? It also explores the disorienting experience of an evolving sense of self, and the liberating experience of forgetting.

It’s a love story, a detective story, a chronicle of family and friendship, and a meditation on the precarious nature of our psychological selves.
