In 1962 he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to Sydney University and a place at St Andrew\u2019s College in Camperdown. He enrolled to study Medicine but became fascinated by the emerging science of psychology and switched degrees in 1964. He was awarded his Bachelor\u2019s degree in 1967, his Master of Science degree in 1969, and his Doctorate in 1973. After a brief period in private clinical practice, he took a lecturer position at the University of Newcastle in 1974, retiring from there as a full Professor in 2002.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e25f66f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e25f66f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Books<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c91fa31 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c91fa31\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sam\u2019s debut novel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Living Memory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was initially published in August 2002. It is now scheduled to be released under the Phenomenology Press imprint in early 2025. It\u2019s a story which examines the question of how much of who we are is determined by our memory. If we have to remember who we love, do we really love them? If we have to remember what we believe, do we really believe it? If we have to remember what we\u2019ve said before, is anything we say what we really think? If our interaction with the universe around us is continually mediated by the past, how and why should we think of ourselves as authentic beings?
